The best place to
start a story is the beginning obviously. So for this post I will describe how
I got to volunteering at Indiana University Health Arnet Hospital. It all started in class the day of February 8th.
That was when it really hit me that maybe now was the time to get the service
or risk not having enough time to get it all. So I spent the entire class
desperately looking for somewhere to volunteer. I tried to look at St.
Elizabeth’s but on the volunteer page there was a sign in big red letters telling
me that they were not accepting any more volunteers. So I kept looking.
Eventually I found the request for volunteers from Arnet. It asked for anyone
to go to the main hospital and sign up for the program. So I emailed the person
in charge of the program and it was set. For that coming Friday I was to go to
the hospital and sign their sets and such. I thought it would be an easy
process. However I was wrong.
To get to the
hospital was not as easy as I expected. I thought it would be a simple bus ride
to get there. However the truth was that getting there was no simple task. It
takes three bus rides and a 2 mile walk to get to the hospital from my dorm. On
that first day as luck would have it, it started to snow. It was so bad that I
did not see the hospital as I was walking until I was less than a quarter of a
mile away from it.
The hospital is on
top of a very steep hill overlooking the highway. With the fog from the snow I
could not see it and thus was surprised when I stumbled into the hospital. I
will describe the hospital in the next post.
