For my first post for this blog I thought it would be a good
idea to explain a little about my service experiences. I’ll admit that it is not really that
noteworthy so I will spare you all the short term service I have done and
instead explain my time at my longest volunteer location I’ve worked at. That
was at Maryhaven Nursing Home, a location only about 15 minutes from my home.
Maryhaven
was a terrifying place to look at. It was situated off the road just enough to
be covered by the trees but not too much as to be unnoticeable. The main
building was a painted a dark yellow almost similar to the color of deli
mustard. It might have been brighter sometime in the past but age had darkened
it. One of the more creepy aspects was the statue in the courtyard by the
parking lot. I still have no idea what
the statue was of and I do not want to find out. It almost seemed like its eyes
would follow you across the yard. The outside was not an area of the location I
wanted to be for a long time.
The
inside of the building was better than the outside. The location for the
residents was painted in bright colors. However like the outside walls the
colors had faded with age. The residents were nice and that was the only reason
I stayed. My job was simple. All I had to do was keep score for the bingo games
or whatever game was being played that day. When that was done I took the
residents who needed help back to their rooms or to go outside and talk with
them. Every week I had this job as opposed to a different one at the location
because the residents had apparently liked me and the staff didn’t like to have
to work the game times.
That
was basically my thoughts on Maryhaven Nursing home. Hopefully I can get a
similar volunteer location for this class.
